We were up close and personal with Bahamians during some of their darkest days. We endured what they endured, and we pitched in side-by-side with them. When you suffer and recover with someone, it becomes a special bond.

As an international education professional for 23 years, one of the most rewarding interactions I have had is with the Fulbright Program’s Outreach Lecturing Fund (OLF) and the Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence (S-I-R) Program.

This National Hispanic Heritage Month, we're highlighting the contributions of outstanding Fulbrighters who live the Fulbright mission through their identities and goals. In this Q&A, Fulbright Scholar Alumni Ambassador Dr. Fausto Sarmiento, and five-time Fulbright Scholar, Dr. Ana Gil-Garcia, share their host country experiences, the collaborative impact on their research, and discuss inclusion and equity in international education.

Fulbright brought me an incredible opportunity with different outcomes: not only was I able to gain invaluable academic experience abroad, which I have already started to incorporate at the University of Buenos Aires; I have also become an active advocate for women in academia.

The third cohort of the Fulbright Arctic Initiative, which is currently accepting applications through September 15, 2020, will stimulate international research collaboration on Arctic issues while increasing mutual understanding between people of the United States and member countries of the Arctic Council.
