Expand Your American Literature Insights: Teach in Sub-Saharan Africa
Did you know that teaching in American Literature is conducted in English at universities in Francophone Africa? Your literature expertise is of particular interest in Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad, Cote d’Ivoire, Guinea, Mali, Niger and Senegal. While these Fulbright Scholar awards focus on teaching, living as an American scholar in Africa also provides an entrée to fascinating research opportunities on local writers, oral and written literature traditions, and cultures.
American literature scholars to Francophone Africa enthusiastically report on their experiences and the positive impacts on both their U.S. teaching and scholarship. They have brought back works by emerging authors, introduced new writers in their syllabi and developed comparative literature courses upon return to U.S. campuses. Scholars also have gained an expanded understanding of the literature they teach, from the range of interpretations and questions received from non-native English speaking students.
