Question: What would be a typical class size for a class that involves writing--American Studies.
Answer: Class size varies enormously by country, so you'll want to consult the program officer. It really depends on the country and the institution, and the local language.
Question: How many classes would I teach for a lecture award?
Answer: The number of classes taught for a lecture award varies quite a bit. Sometimes this is in the award description, and you may want to discuss it with your proposed host institution. Some universities are very vague about the amount of time in the classroom. Often two a semester is a good guess. Some places underutilize lecturers because of the prescriptive nature of the educational system. But some go crazy and will have you teaching 24/7 if you do not say "no."
Question: If I am applying for a lecturing award, how many different courses should I propose?
Answer: If the award does not specify how much teaching, I would discuss this with the host institution; or if a letter is not required, propose that you teach two or three from among a list of possible courses.
Question: I'm applying for a lecturing/research award. Do I have to divide teaching and research as 60/40? My field is dentistry/public health, I'm teaching clinical techniques, which normally doesn't have a syllabus but depends on the work students do in the clinic. Will that be counted as teaching?
Answer: The division between lecturing & research depends on the award. I would consult the program officer if it's not spelled out in the award description. Also, make sure you discuss both in your project proposal.
