Question: Was there a reference somewhere about removing popup blockers prior to starting the online application? Where do I find the reference to remove the blocker?
Answer: Yes, popup blockers must be turned off when using the application.  If you are you using Internet Explorer, to turn off the popup blocker, go to Tools, then Internet Options, then Privacy.

Question: My application will be mailed rather than on-line.  Is registered mail with return receipt good enough?
Answer: Yes, that is fine.

Question: I may be showing my ignorance here, but does every institution have a Fulbright Campus Representative?
Answer: Most institutions do - there's a list on our web site, or write me afterwards at aboris@cies.iie.org and I'll look it up for you.

Questions: Any questions that we SHOULD be asking but aren't?  Are there any common (but not necessarily obvious) pratfalls or things that people neglect to address or fail to give sufficient attention to? What is the thing that most applicants mess up?
Answers:

  • One piece of advice I would give is to read all the instructions.  Lots of common mistakes could be avoided just by doing that!
  • START your proposal with a very specific description of what you propose to do, and then go into the background for why it's important.
  • Make a case for why you must be there.  Many people do not and think it is self-evident. Make a case for why the work should be done and how you are prepared for it. And make note of how the experience will be used beyond the obvious matter of teaching Hawthorne to awkward 19-year olds.
  • Good organization really helps the review committee members understand what you propose - remember they're reading a lot of these!
Side note from one applicant to another: Am I anxious? Yes.  But the more contact I've had with my country contacts and my references about my specific proposal, the less anxious and overwhelmed I've felt. AND my contacts have helped head off some mistakes (e.g., "don't rely on those official stats; they're way off") and have been quite forthcoming with good advice. I'm trying to focus on submitting a strong application rather than actually getting the Award. It makes it seem less intimidating.
