As
director of the Library of Science and Technology at Zhejiang
University in the People's Republic of China, Ying Ye came to
the U.S. with the goal of visiting at least 16 university libraries
to learn how libraries can be run most efficiently.
"I sincerely believe that every university is a unique cultural
body, and the library should be one of its cores," says Ye.
For the first six months of his grant, Ye conducted theoretical
research at the School of Information Resources and Library Science
at the University of Arizona in Tucson. Then he furthered his
studies at the School of Information at the University of Michigan-Ann
Arbor.
For the practical part of his study, Ye visited various universities
and libraries, such as Stanford University and California Institute
of Technology. He also drove to the University of Chicago, University
of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Indiana University at Bloomington,
Ohio University, Harvard University and MIT.
In addition, Ye offered a presentation entitled "An Introduction
to Chinese Universities: Scan and Rank" to his American colleagues
in order to introduce them to the Chinese university system.
