Each year, Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania offers its students
the opportunity to engage in a year-long Area Studies Symposium,
each of which focuses on a different part of the world. During
the 1999-2000 academic year, visiting Fulbright scholar Stefka
Koeva participated in the series of lectures, symposia, films
and special events that comprised the Global Studies Program's
focus on East Central Europe.
A Bulgarian economist, the scholar conducted a seminar on the
history of economic thought and gave a lecture entitled, "Moving
from Command Economy to a Market Economy." The symposium,
according to Koeva's faculty associate, Janet Powers, is designed
to "educate the campus community about regions and issues
that are not well understood in the United States. Koeva's participation,
Powers explained, "deepened our awareness of the economic
and political issues faced by Bulgaria and other east European
countries."
Koeva, chair of and associate professor in the department of
economics at Varna Free University in Bulgaria, hopes to remain
connected to her Fulbright host institution. She and Professor
Anne Fenders of Gettysburg are exploring the possibility of a
professor exchange between their respective institutions, which
would ensure Koeva's future return to the college.
