Sapumal Dhanapala, medical officer, Sri Lankan Ministry of Health
Research: Medical Sciences, Prevalence and Risk Factors of Anemia Among Females in the Reproductive Age Group in the District of Matale
Sri Lanka
October 1998-July 1999

A medical officer from the Sri Lankan Ministry of Health began work during his nine-month grant at Johns Hopkins University on two projects that he believes are of critical importance to his country. He intends to continue work on both projects--an assessment of the prevalence of breast feeding and infant feeding practices and a study of the quality of prenatal care in Sri Lanka--upon his return home. During his stay in Baltimore, the grantee was extremely active, auditing courses, presenting informal lectures, visiting cultural sites and traveling to other parts of the country, including West Virginia, Ohio, Washington, DC and Los Angeles.

At the conclusion of his assignment, the scholar remarked, "I feel sad that I have to get back and leave all my friends behind, but the thought of working to improve the health among the poor in Sri Lanka and the challenges ahead to . . . implement some of the things learned here drives [me] to get back home."
