Fulbright Scholar Stories

Rose Kirumira, Makerere University
Lecturing: Art, African Art
September 1998-December 1998

Among the eight 1998-99 scholars-in-residence from Africa was a fine arts teacher from Makerere University in Uganda. Rose Kirumira, an artist well known in her home country, specializes in the sculpture of the human form in wood, clay and concrete.

She spent the fall 1998 semester lecturing on African art to students at De Anza College, a community college in California. Kirumira's grant illustrates the potential of the program to bring together scholars and students who may never have otherwise had the opportunity to interact in an academic setting.
