Curriculum
development in the area of electric power system engineering was
the focus of Bosnian scholar Mevludin Glavic's 1999-2000 research
grant. During his seven-month stay at the University of Wisconsin-Madison,
Glavic collaborated with his U.S. colleagues to develop new teaching
methods to enhance instruction of engineering in his home country.
While at Madison, he conducted research and prepared new educational
materials for teaching Bosnian undergraduate and graduate students
as well as engineering professionals.
Glavic and his Madison associates, Fernando Alvarado and Antonio
C. Z. De Souza, conducted joint research on voltage collapse determination
and redispatch of power flow, which resulted in the publication
of four scholarly papers. In addition to sharing expertise with
his U.S. colleagues, the scholar created a Web site that will
serve as a way for engineers to exchange research findings and
discuss their progress in the exploration of voltage collapse
sensitivity. Glavic's grant activity was professionally enriching
on both sides of the exchange. Alvarado states, Glavic "brought
great skill, a wonderful perspective . . . The insights I have
gained into the professional and personal aspects of living in
Bosnia could not have been obtained any other way."
