The
recent grant of a Brazilian anthropologist demonstrated how a
Fulbright award can significantly impact a scholar's professional
development. Affiliated at the Columbia University Institute of
Latin American and Iberian Studies, the scholar researched anthropology,
folklore and contemporaneous urban rites. During her stay, she
delivered a well-received paper at the Latin American Association
Meeting in Chicago, which is now being published in Brazil.
After presenting an invited paper on the "Ox-Dance Festival in
Parintins/Amazonas," her current topic of research, the scholar
was encouraged by a U.S. colleague to write a book on the subject.
Upon her return to Brazil in June, the grantee began gathering
more source materials for the proposed book, which she intends
to publish in this country. Recently, her request for an additional
12 months at Columbia to continue her research was approved.
