Concern over public health issues brought Khaled Al-Layl from
Umm Al-Qura University in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, to Wright State
University in Dayton, Ohio, to research the impact of Red Tide
toxins and the role of toxic substances in food poisoning cases.
The goal of his research is to create effective management of
fisheries, public health and ecosystem problems related to marine
biotoxins and other harmful algae.
Al-Layl worked in Wright State University's environmental analysis
lab with Wayne W. Carmichael of the biological science department,
who is well known in the field of biotoxins analysis. "I
gained a lot of new techniques in his laboratory that will definitely
have a great positive effect on my future career," Al-Layl
comments.
Al-Layl's experience in the U.S. was shared by his family, who
moved to the U.S. with him. He enrolled his two boys, Mohammed
and Kenan, in elementary school and was surprised how quickly
they learned English and made friends.
"The overall experience will change my way of thinking, my
views of different aspects and topics and virtually my scientific
future. I will pass my experience to my colleagues in my department
and to friends," he states.
