Fulbright Scholar Stories

Jeannie Woods, associate professor, Winthrop University
Lecturing: Theater and Dance, Theater Performance and Theory and Stage Directing
September 1998-July 1999

Dr. Jeannie Woods addresses a room full of actors, directors, writers and scholars during the Chinese Theatre Festival.

Carol Wang (bottom left) served as a translator for Dr. Woods during her Shakespeare workshops. Lin Yu-Shian (bottom right) was a graduate student of Dr. Woods at the institute and made her mainstage debut during, "All in the Timing."

The National Institute of the Arts in Taiwan recently hosted an associate professor of theatre from Winthrop University in South Carolina. Dr. Jeannie Woods, a specialist in American theatre history, acting and directing, had a particularly dynamic year in Taiwan. She developed several new graduate courses at the institute in her areas of specialization and offered workshops on performing Shakespeare. She presented a number of lectures and demonstrations throughout the country, including a guest lecture at the American Institute in Taiwan.

In the spring of 1999, Dr. Woods collaborated with other Fulbrighters in country and the Department of Theatre Design and Technology at the National Institute of the Arts to produce an evening of comic one acts, "All in the Timing," by American playwright David Ives. She directed and acted in the production, which was a most successful event. Dr. Woods also collaborated throughout the year with Professor Chi Mei Wang, a Taiwanese playwright and director. Together, they translated Professor Wang's comedy, "The Bride and Her Double," the Chinese and English versions of which have been published together in a single volume by the Taiwanese publisher Yuanliou.

Having developed an excellent rapport with her students and colleagues in Taiwan, the scholar continues to maintain close contact with them. In fact, the institute invited her back to direct for its summer theater.

Back in South Carolina, Dr. Woods has given guest lectures on Taiwan's performing arts for her local arts council and is currently developing new courses on contemporary and traditional Asian theatre for her home institution, Winthrop University.
