An important trend in the Eurasia is the continued
interest in U.S.-style journalism, as evidenced
by increased opportunities for professional journalists
and communications faculty in Moldova, the Slovak
Republic, Latvia, Romania and Bulgaria. In Moldova,
the editor/publisher of the Portland, IN, newspaper
The Commercial Review spent much of his four-month
lecturing grant combining classroom instruction
with numerous professional activities in the journalism
community.
He taught well-attended and highly successful courses at Moldova
State University on the role of a free press in an open society.
He also worked closely with the Independent Journalism Center,
the key organization working to train and foster an independent
press in Moldova, and assisted with the development of the Center's
strategic plan. The scholar consulted with various regional newspapers,
the most independent media in the country, at a critical stage
in their early development.
