Hamdy F. M. Mohamed in Washington, DC

Hamdy F. M. Mohamed, a physics professor at El-Minia University in Egypt, recently spent six months at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan learning more about American culture and the accomplishments of his colleagues in the field of physics. He worked with Professors Talbert S. Stein and Walter E. Kauppila on positron interaction with atoms and molecules using a slow positron beam system, a method that is not yet available in Egypt.

"I took about one month to learn the experimental set-up, analyze data and make the experiment more automatic using LabVIEW software," said Mohamed. "I gained a lot of new information in my host laboratory that will definitely have a good effect on my future work." Mohamed stated that his goal, upon return to Egypt, is to construct a slow positron beam system in his country.

Dr. Mohamed had the opportunity to participate in the Division of Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics (DAMOP) 2002 meeting in Williamsburg, Virginia with his hosts from Wayne State University. During the symposium he spoke to a number of other scholars and attended a lecture about the Nobel Prize for physics.

He also spent some time sightseeing with his colleagues, stopping briefly in Washington, D.C. to see the White House, the Pentagon and the Capitol.
