Fulbright Scholar Stories

Gunta Locmele, Faculty of Modern Languages
Department of Applied Linguistics, Translation and Interpreting University of Latvia
Research: Cross-Cultural Differences of Latvian and American Discourses: Advertising
Host: Kent State University, Ohio
September - June 2001

Gunta Locmele, a professor at the University of Latvia, spent three months at Kent State University in Ohio in 2001 researching the topic "Cross-Cultural Differences of Latvian and American Discourses in Advertising."

Locmele considered herself a "missionary of understanding, a public diplomat."

Her paramount goal to become what she calls "a diplomat of mutual understanding between people," compelled her to grow professionally and personally. She participated in many talks with undergraduate and graduate students after the September 11th attacks, was interviewed by the Kent State newspaper, attended conferences and workshops, participated in library seminars and audited several classes taught by her colleagues.

Web chat sessions hosted by the Council for the International Exchange of Scholars helped Locmele to get acquainted with other Fulbright professionals in her field. The chat sessions, she explained, "gave me ideas of what else can be done to inform people in the States about the wider world, and make the world of friendship brighter for myself."

At the Twelfth Annual Conference, Philosophy, Interpretation, Culture, at Binghamton University in New York, Locmele had the occasion to share some of her ideas and experiences. Additionally, "a mountain road drive to Binghamton was a revelation and added a new perspective to understanding American character," Locmele said.

Looking to the future, Locmele plans to incorporate her newfound knowledge into the courses that she teaches at the University of Latvia. For example, she is preparing an additional class in Terminography Management, the building of term bases and electronic tools for translators.

"My colleagues at the University of Latvia, at Kent State and I are also dreaming and planning for continuity. The dream that is yet to materialize is one of cooperation between Kent State, the University of Latvia and the University of Mainz, Germany," Locmele stated. She plans to apply for a Fulbright Alumni Initiatives Award to help her achieve this goal.
