For
nine months, Baldwin-Wallace College associate professor Dennis
Miller taught courses on banking, microeconomics and labor economics
to undergraduates at the Ternopil Academy of National Economy
(TANE) in Ukraine.
Miller taught within a special international program that focuses
on the principles of Western market economies, teaching students
how to conduct business with and within such markets. For admission
into this prestigious program, students must demonstrate an adequate
understanding of spoken and written English. Applicants must also
possess above average grades.
In addition to lecturing, Miller undertook some personal research
related to his field during his visit. In fact, he developed a
keen interest in later pursuing research on the importance of
two factors needed for economic development: equality before the
law and security of private property rights. He believes that
these institutional factors are key to guaranteeing Ukraine's
economic development.
As a result of this experience, "my work on international
activities on my home campus will become even more intensified,"
says Miller. "I have established significant links with people
in Ukraine and will continue to try to make them stronger. I will
encourage faculty members on my campus and on other campuses to
teach at TANE during their sabbaticals."
Miller also hopes to establish a scholarship that will support
students from Ukraine who wish to study in the U.S.
