Programs for non-U.S. Scholars & U.S. Institutions > OLP

Application

The Council for International Exchange of Scholars provides travel awards through the Occasional Lecturer Program (OLP), that enable Fulbright Visiting Scholars to accept guest lecturing invitations at colleges and universities throughout the United States. OLP Travel Awards are granted at three different levels ranging from $250 to $750, which CIES determines based on distances involved.

After reading the instructions, follow these three steps to obtain a Travel Award through the Fulbright Visiting Scholar Occasional Lecturer Program.

  1. Complete and submit the application
  2. Send via e-mail, fax or post a signed letter of invitation on institutional letterhead to:

    CIES

    Washington, DC 20008-3009
    olp@cies.iie.org
    Fax: (202) 362-3442

  3. When your application is approved and your trip completed, submit the on-line OLP evaluation. In turn, we will mail your OLP Travel Award to you at the address you provide in your on-line application.

Travel Award Application Instructions

Please note: OLP application instructions have changed since the publication of the 2003-04 Guide for Visiting Fulbright Scholars

A. Eligibility and Requirements

All current Fulbright Visiting Scholars are strongly encouraged to maximize the impact of their exchange experience by giving lectures to various US audiences. Therefore, CIES offers Travel Awards through the Occasional Lecturer Program (OLP) to help offset the cost of traveling within the United States to give guest lectures. OLP Travel Awards are available for $250, $500 or $750, which CIES determines based on travel distances involved.

To qualify for an OLP Travel Award scholars must submit to CIES a letter of invitation from a US college or university to guest lecture to an audience of students or faculty at their campus. That is, the principal intent of the program is to benefit the host educational institutions and their communities NOT scholars' trips to visit or meet with colleagues, nor to attend conferences.

B. Level and Type of Support

OLP Travel Awards are granted at three different levels ($250, 500 and $750), which CIES determines based on distances traveled as follows:

Distances are calculated using the scholar's US residential address as the "starting point" and the address of the guest lecture site as the "destination". Mileage is determined one way, based on the most direct route, regardless of your chosen method of travel
If lectures are proposed in more than one location, distances are calculated to each destination sequentially
$250 is awarded for travel distances of 75-499 miles; $500 for 500-1999 miles; $750 for 2000 miles or more
No Travel Awards are provided for travel distance of less than 75 miles

Only one OLP Travel Award per scholar is permitted, UNLESS a scholar is invited for an OLP trip in the Minority Initiative category.

ALL OLP Travel Award applications are considered on a first-come, first-served basis. Because of limited funds, CIES cannot guarantee that every request will be honored.

C. Honoraria

If the host institution offers you an honorarium for a guest lecture, you must receive approval from CIES in advance. Refer to the "Employment/Honoraria" section in the Guide for Visiting Fulbright Scholars for information on the steps you must take to obtain the approval. Any honorarium amount should be stated on the OLP application form.

D. Application Instructions

Apply at least one month in advance of your trip.
Complete the online OLP Travel Award application and send a letter by attachment or fax to the address provided on the online application.
Applications will not be considered after a trip has occurred; rather you must apply for OLP Travel Award in advance.
After your trip, complete and submit the online evaluation. Within 2-4 weeks you will receive your OLP Travel Award.
If your OLP trip will take place less than three weeks before your grant end date, you will need to make other arrangements to receive your check, as CIES cannot mail checks outside the US
You must have a Social Security number (SSN) or individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN) to receive an OLP Travel Award. See the section on "Obtaining a Social Security Number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number" in the Guide for Visiting Fulbright Scholars for more information.

E. Minority Initiative

To further expand the impact of the Fulbright Scholar Program, the OLP offers additional funds to support travel to certain US academic institutions identified as minority-serving institutions and to institutions or organizations working with the physically challenged. Attached is a list of institutions that qualify as minority-serving institutions. Examples of institutions that work with physically challenged individuals would include Gallaudet University for the Deaf in Washington, D.C., or programs such as Very Special Arts or the Special Olympics. Information on these and other institutions can be found on-line or at your university library.

The level of support and the procedures for requesting awards are the same as those described above. Because additional funds are available for these visits, you may request one trip to an academic institution as a regular OLP lecturer, and request another to a minority-serving institution.
