Lecturing: Latin American Studies
Host: Bellevue Community College (BCC), Bellevue, WA
January 2005-October 2005

An associate professor of political science from Universidade Federal Fluminense, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Eduardo Gomes is Bellevue Community College's third annual Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence. His focus of study is comparative political economy with an interest in politics and contemporary political theory.

During his seven-month stay, he taught international relations, Latin America political economy and served as a guest lecturer in special seminars and classes across the curriculum. In his work to help faculty globalize the college's offerings, he actively participated in curriculum development and campus life.

"It has been great to share my knowledge of Latin America with students and faculty in so many disciplines-from business to anthropology. I have had opportunities to learn about this environment, too, in a real give-and-take of knowledge, attitudes and culture," Gomes said.

Gomes was also involved as an ambassador to the community. He consulted with the language arts department from a local high school, spoke at Rotary club meetings and gave talks at area colleges and universities. In March, Gomes was the keynote speaker at a national symposium on globalizing the curriculum sponsored by BCC and Cascadia Community College in partnership with the Washington Center for Improving the Quality of Undergraduate Education at Evergreen State College.

Gomes' own academic interests lie in the comparative study of corporate civic and social responsibility in democratic politics. BCC is connecting him to regional leaders who can help him explore United States' approaches to this area of philanthropy and civic engagement.
