As a Fulbright Scholar at Fairfield University
in Connecticut, I was invited to visit two
additional U.S. institutions through Fulbright's
Occasional Lecturer Fund to speak on
the synergisms between social inequality,
models of resource utilization and global
climate change. My visits to the University
of North Florida (UNF) in Jacksonville and
to the University of La Verne-an Hispanic
serving institution-in southern California,
were moments of profound out-of-classroom
interaction with both faculty and students.
Both of my Occasional Lecturer Fund experiences exposed me to
unique efforts in building bridges to enhance
the understanding of society's impact on
our planet. More importantly, at both institutions,
I saw a clear effort to open dialogue and
increase international cooperation through
higher education programs. I was also able
to establish personal connections that may
lead to future exchange programs between
my two host institutions and my home institution
in Brazil.
Based on my experience with the Occasional Lecturer Fund, I would encourage every
Fulbright Visiting Scholar to take advantage
of this added opportunity for international
exchange. I believe that Occasional Lecturer Fund makes the Fulbright
experience even more far reaching. The benefits
of Occasional Lecturer Fund go beyond the personal gains obtained
by visiting a single institution in the
United States.
Finally, I would like to recognize the
staff at CIES for helping establish linkages
between Visiting Scholars and interested
host institutions. These linkages make the
widespread positive impacts of Occasional Lecturer Fund possible.
