Fulbright Scholar Ruth DeFries, an environmental geographer at University of Maryland, College Park, has been awarded a 2007 MacArthur Fellow Program Award. Referred commonly as the “Genius Award,” the fellowships are exceptional in that, much like the Nobel Prize, one cannot apply for the award. MacArthur Fellows are simply tapped and recognized for their significant contributions. The Fulbright Scholar Program extends its congratulations to Dr. DeFries on this notable achievement. www.geog.umd.edu/news/
