Despite its small size, Kuwait maintains
significant global importance as a major exporter
of crude oil and natural gas. Kuwait is bordered
by Iraq and Saudi Arabia, and has sovereignty
over nine small islands in the Persian Gulf. Kuwaitis
are predominantly Sunni Muslim, although a sizeable
Shi'a Muslim minority exists as well. Arabic is
the official language, and English is widely used
in business.
Due to the prosperity of Kuwait's enormous oil
and gas reserves, an extremely large expatriate
population has existed in Kuwait since the 1940s,
including Palestinians, Indians, Pakistanis, Iranians,
and immigrants from other Arab countries.
