Jordan's location at the crossroads of Asia and
Africa has led to a remarkably complex history.
Incorporated at various points in history into
the empires of Babylonia, Mesopotamia, Pharoanic
Egypt, Greece, Rome, and Persia, Jordan is now
predominantly Muslim with a large Palestinian
population. The people of Jordan are h ospitable
and friendly, and women are highly active in the
nation's education and economic systems.
Officially known as the Hashemite Kingdom of
Jordan, the country is sprinkled with ruins from
past cultures along with the architectural creations
of Arab and Islamic influences. With the Dead
Sea in the northwest and the tip of the Red Sea
in the southwest, Jordan also houses the world-renowned
site of Petra - the ancient capital of the Nabataeans
dynasty with its spectacular facades carved into
sandstone cliffs.
Arabic is the official language of Jordan, while
English is widely spoken second language. The
capital city of Amman is one of the oldest continuously
inhabited cities in the world.
Higher education in Jordan consists of six public
universities, 12 private universities, and a large
number of community colleges. Women are well represented
in Jordan's higher education system. Women comprise
just under half of the university population and
more than 60 percent of the community college
population.
Since 1980, over 120 grants to Jordan have been
awarded to U.S. scholars. Most grants have been
for lecturing, while approximately 20 percent
of grants awarded since 1991 have been exclusively
for research. A small number of combined lecturing
and research grants have also been awarded. Some
Fulbright Scholars in Jordan renewed their grant
to stay for an additional year or more, while
others returned to the country on a second grant
several years after the completion of their first.
The University of Jordan in the capital city
of Amman and Yarmouk
University in Irbid host the vast majority
of U.S. Fulbright Scholars in Jordan. Other institutions
at which Fulbright Scholars have lectured and/or
conducted research include, among others, the Royal Scientific Society, Jordan University of Science and Technology
in Irbid, and Mu'tah
University in Al-Karak.
