Estonia is the smallest, most northern, and least
populated of the three European countries commonly
referred to as the Baltic states. (The other two
are Latvia and Lithuania.) Estonia's geographic
position between Scandinavia and Russia continues
to shape its culture and history. Estonians belong
to the Finno-Ugric family of nations and their
language is most closely related to Finnish. Estonia's
conquerors have included Teutonic knights, Swedes
and Danes. Russian rule began in 1721 after Sweden's
defeat in the Great Northern War. The Republic
of Estonia obtained international recognition
after World War I and became a member of the League
of Nations in 1921. World War II brought Estonia
under Soviet occupation. Since regaining its independence
in 1991, Estonia has undergone a remarkable period
of political reform and economic prosperity. In
2004 Estonia joined the European Union.

Educational reform has played an
important role in Estonia's continuing progress.
Educational exchanges between the independent
republic of Estonia and the United States began
in 1992. Since then dozens of Estonians and Americans
have participated in the Fulbright program. American
lecturers have assisted in the reform of humanities
and social science curricula, sometimes in cooperation
with European partners. American lecturers and
researchers are collaborating with Estonian scholars
in a broad range of fields from thermodynamics
to vocal music.
This Web page is designed to help Americans learn
more about Estonia and what it has to offer you
as a Fulbright participant. All of the sections
contain direct links to additional information.
You will find general information about many aspects
of Estonian life and culture, as well as specialized
materials on politics, economics, the media and
law. The education section provides an overview
of the educational system in Estonia and direct
links to potential host institutions for U.S.
scholars. Most Americans are affiliated with institutions
in Tallinn, a beautiful medieval city, untouched
by World War II, or at Tartu University, established
in 1632. If you have additional questions about
the country or the program, please contact CIES
staff.
