Renowned for its legendary archaeological sites and relics of ancient civilizations, Egypt has occupied a position of immense importance in the Middle East throughout history.  The fertile Nile valley, the pyramids of Giza, the temples of Luxor, the metropolises of Cairo and Alexandria, countless tombs, mosques, and museums, and the cultural sophistication of the Egyptian people are some of the elements that have made Egypt one of the most distinguished countries in the world.

The population of modern Egypt is approximately 94 percent Sunni Muslim, and Egyptian women are among the most liberated in the Arab world.  The official language of Egypt is Arabic, and English and French are common second languages.

University education in Egypt is highly respected throughout the Arab world. Cairo's Al-Azhar University is the oldest in the world, and Cairo University was the first modern university established in the Arab world. Other major Egyptian universities include Ain Shams University, Mansoura University, Helwan University, Menoufia University, Tanta University, Alexandria University, Assiut University, Zagazig University, Minia University, Suez Canal University, South Valley University, as well as a number of private universities and research institutions including Misr International University, Misr University for Science & Technology, October University for Modern Science & Arts, The American Research Center in Egypt, and the American University in Cairo.

More than 150 U.S. scholars have received Fulbright grants for Egypt since 1980 - approximately 40 percent for lecturing, 40 percent for research, and the remaining 20 percent for a combination of lecturing and research. There has been enormous variety in these Fulbright Scholars' fields of specialization, ranging - literally - from agriculture to zoology.

Although the largest numbers of Fulbright Scholars have been based at Cairo University, Alexandria University, or Ain Shams University, almost all of the institutions listed above have hosted at least one Fulbright Scholar. In addition, other institutions such as the Academy of Arts in Cairo, the Cairo Conservatoire of Music, and the Ministry of Agriculture have also hosted Fulbright Scholars.

CIES encourages interested applicants to make use of the following links to complement their research into potential opportunities available in Egypt. Please also feel free to use the contact information at the bottom of this page to get in touch with CIES program personnel.
