Croatia, like its immediate neighbors, has stood at the crossroads of Europe, the Near East and Asia for millennia. It has been a part of a number of empires and has itself been the site of important cities and centers of learning and the arts. While not as heavily damaged as some of its former co-republics in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, Croatia was greatly impacted by the Balkan wars of the early and mid-1990s. As Croatia continues to reform its communist-era institutions as well as build on its numerous successes in political and economic development, it is rapidly becoming a key tourist, economic and business area in Central and Eastern Europe.

The Fulbright Program has been active in Croatia since the early 1990s, a continuation of the long-running Fulbright Program in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Fulbright grantees in the country have been active at all of the universities in a variety of fields in the social sciences, humanities, law, business and the natural sciences. They have taught courses to undergraduate and graduate students, worked on curriculum development, collaborated with Croatian colleagues on research in the laboratory and in the field, done consulting work for the Croatian government, and published numerous articles and stories stemming from their Fulbright grants in the country as well as other activities.

Croatia continues to be interested in attracting scholars and professionals who relish challenge and want to immerse themselves in a new culture while working with students and faculty on issues in their specialty as well as larger issues of higher education reform. This Web page is designed to help Americans learn more about the country and what it has to offer you as a Fulbright participant. All of the sections contain direct links to additional information. You will find general information about many aspects of Croatian life and culture, as well as specialized materials on politics, economics, the media and law.
