Situated on Africa's western coast, Cameroon
is a nation of incredible diversity, both in its
geography and its people. From the desert in the
north, to the tropical rain forests of the south,
to the savannahs, mountains, national parks, and
game reserves throughout the country, the variation
in Cameroon's landscape is remarkable. Opportunities
to view elephants, lions, antelopes, warthogs,
chimpanzees, crocodiles, and other wildlife are
abundant.

As a result of colonialism, both French and English
are the official languages in Cameroon. In addition,
a large number of indigenous languages are spoken
among the more than 200 ethnic groups in the country.
Cameroon's per capita income and rates of school
attendance are among the highest in sub-Saharan
Africa.
Today, there are six universities in Cameroon
- the University of Buea, the University of Douala,
the University of Dschang, the University of Ngaoundere,
the University of Yaounde I, and the University
of Yaounde II (the University of Yaounde was split
into two separate institutions in 1993 as a result
of the growing number of students, and the need
to distribute higher education opportunities more
evenly across the country). In addition, a private
university, technical and professional schools,
and a number of teacher training colleges have
been established in recent years.

Sixty-one Fulbright grants to Cameroon have been
awarded since 1970 for lecturing and/or research
on a large variety of topics. The majority of
Fulbright Scholars were at the University of Yaounde,
although over the past decade an increasing number
of scholars have been based at the University
of Buea and the University of Dschang.
Fourteen Fulbright Scholars renewed their grants
for an additional year or more, and two scholars
returned to Cameroon on a second Fulbright grant
several years after the completion of their original
project. More than a third of Fulbright Scholars
in Cameroon have been accompanied by family members.
Fulbright grant packages for Cameroon include
tuition support for accompanying children.
