Burkina Faso, a landlocked nation in West Africa, has developed a strong reputation in recent years for its prominence in the advancement of African art and culture. Burkina Faso hosts some of Africa's most renowned cultural events, alternating between the biennial Panafrican Film and Television Festival of Ouagadougou (the largest film festival in Africa), and Burkina Faso's biennial cultural festival of music, dance, and theatre.

Formerly French Upper Volta, the country's name was changed to Burkina Faso in 1984, which can be translated as "Land of the Upright People" or "Country of the Incorruptibles." Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso, is a historically rich city located in the center of the country and had been the capital of the Mossi empire for hundreds of years. Although the Mossi people continue to play a leading role in the national politics, Burkina Faso is ethnically diverse with over 60 ethnic groups living within its borders.

Since 1983, 21 Fulbright grants have been awarded to scholars to lecture and/or conduct research in Burkina Faso. The vast majority of scholars to date have worked in the fields of American literature and linguistics at the University of Oaugadougou, although research in art history and medical science has been conducted as well. Five Fulbright Scholars renewed their grants for a second year, and six scholars were accompanied by spouses and/or children during their stays. Fulbright grant packages for Burkina Faso include tuition support for accompanying children.
