Belarus, like its neighbor Ukraine, is a Slavic country much of whose history has been subsumed into the histories of Russia and the Soviet Union. One of the new independent states created after the dissolution of the USSR in 1991, Belarus remains one of the least studied and one of the least visited of the Soviet successor states.

Situated geographically between Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia to the west and northwest, Russia to its east, and Ukraine to its south, Belarus has experienced centuries of invasion and conquest, most recently Hitler's invasion.

Old Vitebsk, Marc Chagall, 1914

Although many Americans are familiar with the early paintings of Marc Chagall--flying cows and fiddlers on the roof--they may not realize that these images are drawn from Chagall's memories of village life in Vitebsk, Belarus. Many Americans are the descendants of Jewish immigrants from Belarus, who came to the United States in the late 19th-early 20th centuries, bringing their stories of Minsk and Pinsk to vaudeville stages. For students of World War II, Belarus is associated with the war on the Eastern front. Finally, for some Americans, Belarus is associated with Olympic sports--gymnastics in the summer games and ice hockey in winter.

The Fulbright Program with Belarus, established in 1991, has been a major conduit for international exchange between Belarus and the United States.

In 2005-06 five American scholars will lecture in Belarus and six Belarusians will come to the United States. American Fulbrighters in Belarus have greatly enjoyed their Fulbright experience and have contributed significantly to the process of reform in the country, especially in higher education. American Fulbrighters have lectured in law, international relations, business, linguistics, intercultural communication and women's studies. One American helped create the first internet cafe in Grodno and lectured on film and cultural studies. Fulbright scholar Melinda Hickman's rewarding experience teaching law and business in Belarus is detailed in the scholar story found on our Web site.

CIES encourages interested applicants to make use of the following links to complement their research into potential opportunities available in Belarus. Please also feel free to use the contact information at the bottom of this page to get in touch with CIES program personnel.
