Many Americans may be surprised to learn that the geographic center of Europe is located in Ukraine. Yet its history reflects the encounters between the rich and varied civilizations that developed in Europe, the Near East and Asia.

Fulbright scholars will experience first-hand the legacy of these historical encounters in the many cultures found in contemporary Ukraine and in the process of creating a strong, new independent state.

The country is rich in potential--its archives and history not fully studied; its political and economic systems in the throes of reform. In other words, Ukraine is an exciting place in which to witness post-Communist transformation in eastern Europe.

Fulbright Scholars continue to play a critical role in this transformation and in particular in the reform of the educational system. Ukraine-American Fulbright exchanges began in the 1970s as part of the Fulbright Program with the Soviet Union.

The creation of a Fulbright program with independent Ukraine in 1993 has resulted in a phenomenal expansion in the program. Almost 250 Ukrainian scholars have come to the United States since then and about 200 American professors and professionals have gone to Ukraine.

American scholars have lectured in a broad range of fields, including but not limited to education, business, public administration, law, agriculture, literary theory, history, classics, sociology, American studies, computer science and Ukrainian studies. Some Americans lecture at the major state-established institutions, others at new and independent institutions.

Regardless of their placement, all Americans have been involved in curriculum reform. American Fulbright scholars have returned to the United States with a deeper understanding of Ukraine, the new Europe and themselves.

In order to familiarize American scholars both with the country and with its educational establishment, CIES has located a number of useful websites. Interested applicants should consult these pages and the CIES program personnel.
