U.S.-Japan International Education Administrators Program
Award #0154
Category:  Seminar
Number of Awards: 5
Special Deadline:  November 1, 2009
Grant Activity: Participate in a group program designed to familiarize participants with higher education, society and culture in Japan. Program consists of briefings, campus visits, appointments with selected government officials, cultural activities and meetings with Japanese international education professionals. Because the program has an intensive, physically demanding, pre-arranged itinerary and schedule, little time is available for individual projects or appointments unless undertaken at the conclusion of the program at the grantee's expense. The program is not intended to be a vehicle for initiating or implementing a U.S. institution's linkage program, student recruitment or establishment of branch campuses. Accompanying dependents are not allowed.
Additional Qualifications: Applicants are not required to have a doctoral degree.
Location: Visits to various institutions.
Length of Grant: 3 weeks
Starting Date: Mid-June 2010
Comments: PLEASE FOLLOW THE SPECIAL APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR THIS AWARD. They can be found on the CIES Web site, www.cies.org/IEA/IEA_I.htm. Applicants must be international education administrators (for example, foreign student advisors, study abroad advisors, foreign student admissions) or senior-level university administrators (deans, vice presidents, provosts and presidents) with substantial (at least 25 percent of their time) responsibility for enhancing the international dimension of their institutions. Applicants must be affiliated with a 2- or 4-year college, university or a nonprofit international education exchange organization and have a minimum of 5 years of full-time work experience in the field of international education. Directors of English language programs and instructors in such programs are not eligible. Preference is given to applicants who have not had significant professional visits to Japan in the last 5 years as well as to applicants who are based in institutions that already have some substantive connections with Japan manifested in a reasonable size population (25+) of Japanese students, a study abroad program and linkage agreements with Japanese institutions, or both. Applicants from 2-year colleges should be aware that the itinerary in Japan does not include visits to 2-year institutions. Grantees are required to attend an orientation program held in conjunction with the annual National Association of Foreign Student Advisors (NAFSA) conference in Kansas City, MO in late May 2010 at their own expense.
