Awards and Benefits
Summary:  Up to 25 full-maintenance lecturing awards, two travel-only lecturing awards, up to 18 research awards and one collaborative lecturing/research award to be implemented jointly with an Indian scholar. See also research opportunities under the South and Central Asia Regional Research Program.
Program Overview:  The academic year is July 2009 through March 2010. Most institutions follow an academic year system. A few institutions follow the semester system, with semesters from June or July to October or November 2009 and from November or December 2009 to March or April 2010. Community college faculty are eligible for affiliation with undergraduate colleges. All instruction is in English. Contact CIES to obtain names and addresses of university representatives at host institutions. In keeping with the spirit of generating private support to augment funds provided by the U.S. government, two grants in India will be partially supported by the Pai Foundation in Manipal, Karnataka. General information on South Asia and on higher education in India, as well as access to other Web sites, are available at www.columbia.edu/cu/libraries/indiv/area/sarai, www.goidirectory.nic.in/education.htm, and www.fulbright-india.org. Clearance for Research or Lecturing Assignment: Clearance of the government of India is required for all Fulbright assignments. CIES will request government of India visa authorization forms from recommended candidates in the fall, along with the copies of the passport photo page and all previous Indian visas obtained. The United States Educational Foundation in India (USEFI) submits the applications of selected candidates to the government of India for clearance of teaching assignments and research proposals. The government of India officially estimates that its clearance process can take up to 3 months, but in 2006-07, the process took much longer. In January 2007, the government of India recognized the hardships such lengthy waiting periods had caused individual applicants and stated that it would implement a new system to expedite the process. As a result, in 2007-08 about 28 percent applications were approved beyond the 3 month period, but all were cleared within 6 months. The USEFI office coordinates with the government of India on all clearance requests, and advises candidates of the status of their applications. Grants cannot and will not be issued for travel to India until proper government of India approvals are received, therefore applicants should plan accordingly.
