Program Overview:
The academic year runs from September through mid-May; the fall semester is from the beginning of September to mid-December and the second semester is from early January to mid-May. Most awards include free housing arranged and paid for by the host institution; please see the benefits table for more information. At some universities the grantees will also be able to use the health care services available for the host university faculty and staff. Where this is not possible, high-quality health care in English is easily available for a very moderate price. Finland offers a safe environment for grantees and their families to live in. English is widely spoken throughout the country. Finnish universities are going through reforms in their academic structure. Most universities are following a system involving two semesters, each comprised of two periods, often 7 weeks in length, with a one-week break between periods. No teaching is generally offered during June-August, thus grants are not usually available for the summer months. The Fulbright Center in Helsinki arranges a 3-day orientation for grantees at the end of August that those arriving for the fall semester are expected to attend. An orientation meeting may also be arranged for grantees arriving in January. CIES staff will send, upon request, specific information about awards. For general information on Finland go to the country page, www.cies.org/country/finland.htm.

Tuition Assistance: The Finnish school system is considered one of the best in the world. Finnish schools are free although some special schools, such as international schools, may charge tuition. Universities do not currently charge tuition. Increasingly, instruction in English is available in elementary and secondary schools and kindergartens in university cities.

Other Benefits:
Housing is arranged and paid for by the host institution. Applicants should communicate their housing needs to the host institution so that appropriate housing can be arranged for them. Housing benefits are not available for grantees in the Mid-Career Professional Development program, who arrange and pay for their own housing. Finnish medical care is of high quality and low cost. At some institutions Fulbright Scholars have access to the university health care services provided for faculty and staff.
