Awards and Benefits
Summary:  Up to 17 awards, including two research awards, five lecturing awards with research options, nine distinguished lecturing awards and one artist-in-residence award. See also Fulbright Distinguished Chairs Program and regional/special programs in Europe.
Program Overview:  The Austrian-American Educational Commission evaluates proposals in terms of their potential for contributing to fulfilling the program's mandate of promoting mutual understanding between the peoples of Austria and the U.S. Proposals for flexible combinations of lecturing and research will be evaluated for their scholarly excellence, comparative approaches, bilateral relevance, and potential for establishing or enhancing institutional relationships. Applicants for "All Disciplines" lecturing/research awards should have at least several years of experience beyond the doctorate and are advised to arrange affiliation with an appropriate Austrian host institution and document this contact by including a letter of invitation from their proposed host with their application. The academic calendar is from October 1, 2009 to January 31, 2010 for the winter semester and from March 1 to June 30, 2010 for the summer semester. A university-level course in Austria usually consists of one 90-minute meeting per week that is equal to two "academic hours." As a rule, the quality of an applicant's proposal is more important to the Austrian-American Educational Commission than the academic rank of the applicant. The Distinguished Chairs program is conceived to attract senior scholars. Grantees may teach in English. Knowledge of German is not required; some German is a pragmatic necessity. Prospective applicants may contact the Commission for further information: Dr. Lonnie Johnson, executive director, Austrian-American Educational Commission (Fulbright Commission) e-mail: Ljohnson@fulbright.at; Fulbright Commission, quartier21/MQ, Museumsplatz 1, 1070 Vienna, Austria, +431.236.7878.0; www.fulbright.at.
