Summary:
Approximately five All Disciplines awards for lecturing, lecturing/research or research and one Study of the United States lecturing award.
Program Overview:
Applicants without prior experience in Thailand and younger scholars are encouraged to apply. The first semester of the academic year begins in June 2009 and the second in November 2009. Collaborative or individual research is possible in conjunction with lectureships. For research awards, a collaborative project with local scholars is desirable. Academic applicants must hold at least the rank of assistant professor and have a minimum of 3 years of university teaching experience. Professionals should have at least 5 years of relevant work experience beyond the terminal degree and, for lecturing or lecturing/research awards, the indicated amount of university teaching experience. All instruction is in English, but while students have some facility in English, levels of comprehension vary. Therefore, courses are sometimes team taught or an interpreter may be provided. Applicants for the All Disciplines award are strongly encouraged to secure a letter of invitation from the host institution and include it with the application. All applicants should be prepared to present lectures at institutions in other parts of Thailand and/or in other East and Southeast Asian countries. Some cost-sharing arrangements exist with the host institutions and the John F. Kennedy Foundation of Thailand.
Stipend: For lecturers at the assistant professor level, 72,000 baht per month, and 78,000 baht per month at the associate and full professor level. Stipend for professionals based upon experience comparable to academic ranks. For researchers at all academic ranks, 51,000 baht per month.
Maintenance: Free housing on campus may be provided by some provincial universities, but grantees are charged for utilities. A housing allowance is provided where university housing is not available. Depending on the number of accompanying dependents, the rates are 12,000-18,000 baht per month in provincial locations and 20,000-28,000 baht per month in Bangkok. In addition to housing support, grantees will receive a monthly subsistence allowance (depending on the number of accompanying dependents, 4,000-10,000 baht per month in provincial locations; 6,000-12,000 baht per month in Bangkok) designed to offset additional local costs.
Travel/Relocation: International travel for grantee and for one dependent if grant is for 4 months or more and if dependent is in Thailand for 80% of the grant period. For grants of 4 months or more, a settling-in allowance of 15,000 baht intended for purchase of household items and related expenses. An in-transit allowance of 4,500 baht to cover hotel and transportation costs in the first few days is paid immediately upon arrival. Reimbursement of up to 15,000 baht for excess-baggage charges if required, divided as appropriate between the forward and return portions of the trip upon presentation of receipts.
Tuition Assistance: Grantees are allowed 63,000-126,000 baht in provincial locations and 82,000-164,000 baht in Bangkok for actual tuition costs for accompanying school-age children. Grantees with dependent children should note that while the tuition allowance provided is sufficient to cover the majority of expenses at nearly all schools in Thailand, it will cover only about one-third of the costs at the International School of Bangkok which charges fees exceeding the tuition allowance provided.
Other Benefits:
Grantees will be reimbursed up to 14,000 baht for purchase of books, supplies and services essential to the grantee's project upon presentation of receipts. Thai language study costs will be reimbursed up to 20,000 baht. For research grantees, a reimbursable allowance of up to 30,000 baht to support scholarly activities. In all cases, receipts must be presented to the Thailand-U.S. Educational Foundation to receive the reimbursement in baht. Grantees will be reimbursed for up to 20,000 baht for their language study upon presentation of receipts for the lessons.
