Awards and Benefits
Summary:  Up to six research awards and eight lecturing awards and up to six partial grants.
Program Overview:  Lecturing awards are for 5 or 10 months. Research awards are for 2 to 10 months. The academic year in Taiwan consists of two semesters, generally beginning in early September and in late January or mid-February. Research grants may start anytime after July 1, 2009, but must end before September 30, 2010. Lecturing grants are less flexible. A 10-month grant must begin September 1, 2009. A 5-month grant may begin either on September 1, 2009, or late January or mid-February 2010. There are no summer terms at Taiwan universities, therefore summer lecturing grants are not possible. Except for applicants in a professional field or the arts, who may have an M.A. or M.F.A., all applicants are expected to hold a doctoral degree and to have had research publications or produced creative works in the last 3 years. For lecturing awards, unless otherwise indicated in specific awards, applicants must hold the rank of at least assistant professor and have 3 or more years of university teaching experience. Applicants for research awards must be at least three years beyond completion of the Ph.D. All teaching is in English. There are four schools for American children in Taipei, two in Taichung and two in the Tainan-Kaohsiung area. The grades available for schooling vary from K-8 to K-12. Grantees in all categories may be permitted to spend up to one-fifth of their grant period in mainland China to engage in scholarly activities related to their project.

Stipend: Lecturers are provided a monthly U.S. dollar supplement ranging from US$260 (single) to US$360 (couple) to US$460 (family).
Maintenance: Monthly stipend of approximately NT (New Taiwan) $71,000 (approximately US$2,178) for the grantee and an additional NT$9,200 (approximately US$282) for accompanying spouse and NT$2,800 (approximately US$86) per accompanying child. All lecturers are entitled to free living quarters provided by the host institution. Conditions and items of furniture vary by host institution. Researchers do not receive free housing but do receive a housing allowance of NT$12,500 (approximately US$385) per month. Cost-shared grants must be approved by host institution and may be taxed by the Taiwan government. Note: All grant benefits except the dollar supplement are paid in NT (New Taiwan) dollars. While the value of the grant in U.S. dollars may vary with fluctuations in the NT$/US$ exchange rate, the amount paid in NT dollars remains the same. As of 11/09/07, the exchange rate was NT$32.6=US$1.
Travel/Relocation: Round-trip economy-class tickets provided for grantee and one accompanying dependent who will accompany the grantee for 80% of the grant period. A baggage allowance based on a combination of the number of accompanying dependents and the length of the grant. The rate per month is NT$4,000 (single), NT$5,000 (couple) and NT$6,000 (family).
Tuition Assistance: All full-grant lecturers and researchers will be provided a tuition allowance for the education of two accompanying school-age children (grades 1-12 only).
Other Benefits:  All lecturers and researchers are entitled to an incidental allowance of NT$4,000 (approximately US$123) per month, to be used for books, supplies, etc. All grantees will also receive a settling in allowance of NT$30,000 (US$920). The Taiwan Fulbright Foundation will continue benefits to grantees who choose to spend part of their grant period in mainland China. Partial maintenance awards are NT$17,000 (approximately US$521) to NT$40,000 (approximately US$1,226) per month. Please note: For cost-shared lectureships, the host institution provides a salary equal to that of a Taiwan professor and the Taiwan Fulbright Foundation supplements this amount. The total combined stipend, even after deduction of local income tax, will be no less than a grant funded entirely by the Foundation. Grantees should be aware that the Taiwan salary portion is subject to approval by the host institution, taxable by Taiwan authorities, and is usually paid at the end of each month.
