Program Overview:  Candidates with a Ph.D. and the rank of associate or full professor or the equivalent professional rank and experience are preferred. For academics or professionals, at least 5 years of postdoctoral college or university teaching experience is expected. The academic year is usually divided into either two terms or four terms. If two terms, they are from January or February to June and from July to early December. If four terms, they are from January or February to March or April, April or May to June, July to September and September or October to November or December. Candidates are expected to correspond directly with host institutions to determine whether their backgrounds, experiences and specializations are of interest. A letter of invitation on host institution letterhead from the potential host institution(s) is required as part of the application. Applications for lecturing and research collaboration to be shared between host institutions in close geographic proximity are welcome. Applications must be for at least 6 months; 11 months is preferred. Applications can be submitted for lecturing, research or a combination of both. Lecturing can include undergraduate and/or graduate teaching, curriculum development and faculty, staff and student seminars. Effort is made to place Fulbright Scholars at a range of South African universities. Note that more applications are generally received from scholars proposing to work in the Western Cape than can be funded.
