Awards and Benefits
Summary:  Four or more lecturing/research awards. For research awards, see the African Regional Research Program.
Program Overview:  Candidates with a Ph.D., a minimum of 5 years of university teaching and research experience and previous experience in Africa are preferred. The academic year calendar for most universities is September through June. Grantees are expected to come for the full academic year. Applicants must be prepared for challenging living conditions and need to present both lecturing skills and well-developed research projects. Host institutions assist with housing; however, facilities are not in comparison with U.S. standards in most cases, so adaptability to local conditions is important. Most housing is located on campus and seldom has security concerns. The U.S. Embassy in Nigeria will confirm placements at appropriate host institutions following receipt of recommended applications; applicants may specify if they have had contact with particular host institutions regarding placement so the Embassy can follow up. A number of schools are available for accompanying dependent (K-12) school-age children.
