Awards and Benefits
Summary:  Up to 12 awards in all academic fields for research in most Sub-Saharan African countries. Up to five awards in AIDS and AIDS-related research in most Sub-Saharan African countries.
Program Overview:  Research applications are welcome for all Sub-Saharan Africa countries that offer lecturing or lecturing and research awards except South Africa. No awards to South Africa are available under the regional research program, because South Africa has its own country program with awards for lecturing, combined lecturing and research or research. Applications for unlisted Sub-Saharan African countries will be considered on a case-by-case basis for the regional research program; please consult CIES before submitting an application for an unlisted country. However, applications cannot be accepted for projects in countries with which the United States has no formal diplomatic relations nor in the following countries: Burundi, Central African Republic, Guinea Bissau, Liberia, Somalia or Sudan.

Benefits
Stipend: $1,870 monthly base stipend, according to the standard base stipend formula.
Maintenance: Standard maintenance. For 2007-2008 depending on the country and number of accompanying dependents, it ranged from $500-$2,350 per month, plus housing allowance.
Travel/Relocation: Standard travel/relocation. For 2007-2008 the following was provided: $5,500-$8,300 for the grantee, dependent travel allowance of $3,250-$5,500 for one accompanying dependent, or $6,500-$11,000 for two or more accompanying dependents. Amount varies, depending on country.
Tuition Assistance: Up to $25,000 per family for grades K-12 is reimbursed for two or more accompanying dependent children for full academic year, with maximum benefit of $12,500 per child. Amount adjusted for shorter grant periods. Reimbursement based on actual cost of tuition and fees only or home schooling materials. Requests to cover higher actual amounts for tuition and fees only will be considered but cannot be guaranteed.
Other Benefits:  One-time research allowance of $3,000 to support research activity.
