Comments: Bluefields Indian and Caribbean University (BICU) is one of two public universities on the Caribbean coast. The TESL program is scheduled to begin in February 2007. Although many people speak English creole in Bluefields, English training is needed for English teachers at the high school level. Currently, 90 percent of English teachers at the high school level do not hold any type of undergraduate degree. Therefore, the program is focused on preparing in-service teachers to obtain an undergraduate degree. For more information, contact Angela Petronila Borown, director of the English Department at abrownhendricks@yahoo.com or tel. 505.572.1116 or Maira Vargas at the U.S. Embassy at vargasrm@state.gov. A letter of invitation is not required, but some prior contact with the institution is encouraged.
