Study of the United States
Award #9156
Category:  Lecturing or Lecturing/Research
Deadline:  August 1, 2008
Grant Activity: Teach graduate courses or seminars and assist with the development of an American studies program. Lecturing is in English and has generally been limited to graduate courses as undergraduate instruction is in Bahasa Malaysia (Malaysian national language). Fulbright Scholars typically also conduct faculty seminars on teaching methods and curriculum development. Fulbright Scholars are also frequently invited to lecture at other Malaysian universities. Courses and seminars to be taught are planned in conjunction with the host department, but applicants should propose and include sample syllabi for specific courses they are prepared to teach.
Specialization(s): Preference will be given to applicants specializing in American studies: history, literature, politics and political process, foreign policy (especially contemporary foreign policy and foundations of foreign policy), higher education administration, society and culture, and philosophy.
Language: English is widely spoken in Malaysia, particularly within the academic community, and graduate instruction is in English. For research purposes, some knowledge of Bahasa Malaysia will be helpful.
Additional Qualifications: Professionals may apply if they have at least 3 years of university teaching experience beyond terminal degrees.
Location: Host affiliation to be determined by the Commission but applicant may express preference.
Length of Grant: 5 months or 10 months
Starting Date: May or June 2009 or November 2009 preferred. Other dates are also possible.
Comments: Grants are traditionally for either a single semester (5 months) or a full academic year (10 months), though applications proposing stays of at least 3 months will also be considered. While applicants may specify preferred host institutions and are welcome to include an invitation letter from a specific institution, the Malaysian-American Commission on Educational Exchange reserves the right to make assignments based on the best match between the expertise of the grantee and the needs of prospective host universities, and to determine the final affiliation based on the needs and interests of applicants and contributions by prospective hosts. Applicants proposing a diverse range of potential courses will be more easily placed.
