Grant Activity: Teach graduate or undergraduate courses. Advise on curriculum development and possibly on graduate theses. Conduct tutorials and informal meetings with students outside of class.

Specialization(s): Preference will be given to applicants specializing in American history, American literature, American politics and political process, American foreign policy, American philosophy and American higher education.

Additional Qualifications: Historians specializing in 18th- and 19th-century history are of particular interest. In literature, preference will be given to those who propose to teach the canon of classic American literature.

Location: Based upon the scholar's expertise and the needs of institutions, assignments will be made to key institutions of higher education throughout China in conjunction with the Ministry of Education.

Length of Grant: 5 months or 10 months
|

Starting Date: Late August 2009 for 10-month grants and August 2009 or February 2010 for 5-month grants
|

Comments: Applicants for this award in the indicated specializations should propose to teach broad gauged courses that introduce Chinese undergraduate and graduate students to the main themes and core scholarship in their fields. Applications from scholars who study American culture and society will be considered only if their academic training and scholarship enable them to offer courses that meet the criteria indicated above and their proposal indicates an intent to offer such courses. Applicants who propose to teach either American literature or American history should have a Ph.D. in the pertinent field, have publications in that field and regularly teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels in that field. Scholars who are still early in their careers, but who have at least 3 years of teaching experience, are encouraged to apply.
