Grant Activity: Applicants may propose research projects, teaching and curriculum development projects or a combination of both. For research projects, collaborative work with local scholars is desirable. All grantees may be asked to deliver occasional lectures and advise students. Proposals with a teaching component must include sample syllabi for proposed courses or seminars.
Specialization(s): Projects in any discipline will be considered, but preference will be given to proposals that strengthen Venezuela's democracy, governance and economic development: (1) political science, security studies, international relations, public policy, political systems, comparative politics, social movements, public administration, women's issues and civic education; (2) administration of justice, including criminal law and procedures, human rights, conflict resolution (peace building, mediation, negotiation, facilitation and alternative dispute resolution), constitutional law, labor law, intellectual property rights, taxation, ethics, court procedures, oral argument, judgment and rule of evidence, law and the media, techniques in criminal sentencing and comparative law; (3) sustainable development, economic diversification away from an oil-based economy, and international trade and investment; (4) U.S. studies, focusing on American government and politics, foreign policy, American history, literature, African American and other ethnic literature, and film, music, culture and society; (5) education, including TEFL, educational policy, primary and secondary education, adult education and distance learning.
Language: Fluent Spanish is required for all fields; applicants must submit a language proficiency report.
Location: Applicants must arrange affiliation and include letter of invitation.
Length of Grant: 3 months to 10 months
Starting Date: September/October 2009 or January 2010
Comments: Candidates are urged to identify a prospective host institution but the U.S. Embassy in Caracas can assist with affiliations and local contacts. Inquiries may be directed to Angel Garcia at garciaag2@state.gov. Starting dates vary according to the selected Venezuelan university. Grantee should check with the Embassy prior to making travel arrangements.
