Additional Qualifications: Assistant professors must be 3 years beyond the receipt of their Ph.D. at the time of application. Non-academic professionals with a record of scholarly or professional publications may apply.

Comments: These awards are for individuals who are not China specialists that seek to establish a focus on China in their work or to undertake research on a comparative project. Research may be undertaken without competency in Mandarin provided the project is feasible without that language capability. Grantees may spend 1 month of a 6-8 month grant or up to 3 months of a 9-10 month grant in Hong Kong at facilities such as the Universities Service Center for China Research (USC) (www.usc.cuhk.edu.hk) or using research facilities in Taiwan. Applicants who wish to work at the USC or at one of the other Hong Kong research centers should contact the USC or those centers directly for assistance in setting up their visit. Applicants who wish to spend part of the grant period in Taiwan should arrange an affiliation with a Taiwan institution and secure a letter of invitation.
