Grant Activity: Applicants may propose research projects, teaching and curriculum development projects or a combination of both. For research projects, collaborative work with local scholars is desirable. All grantees may be asked to deliver a series of seminars in the applicant's field of expertise. Proposals with a teaching component must include sample syllabi for proposed courses or seminars. Projects that support the development of doctoral programs are especially welcome.
Specialization(s): While applicants may propose affiliation with any university in Venezuela, seven institutions have made specific requests: (1) The Central University of Venezuela in Caracas, www.ucv.ve, seeks specialists in marine sciences, ecology, information technology, vegetal physiology, soil biology, oil and petrochemistry, super gravity and symmetry, medical physics and molecular physics. The University's Institute of Food Science and Technology seeks a specialist in food microbiology, food chemistry and biochemistry, food product development, food processing and technology, sensory analysis and consumer testing, food engineering, quality assurance, food laws and regulations, and food packaging. The Institute of Fluid Mechanics seeks a specialist in fluid mechanics, fluid stability, hydrology, industrial processes, and risk and disaster management. (2) The University of the Andes in Merida, www.ula.ve, seeks a specialist in information technology, scientific instrumentation and biomedical engineering. (3) Simon Bolivar University in Caracas, www.usb.ve, seeks specialists in oil production and transportation, gas technology, geophysics and exploration, rotor dynamics, design and industrial maintenance, bio and clinical engineering, materials science, electric power, robotics, information technology, telecommunications, biochemistry and immunology, electronics, nutrition, fluid mechanics, and urban and environmental management. (4) The University of the Orient (various campuses), www.udo.edu.ve, seeks specialists in fluid mechanics, electronics, genetics, systems engineering, forestry and biotechnology. (5) The Faculty of Engineering at Metropolitan University in Caracas, www.unimet.edu.ve, seeks a specialist in environmental engineering (eco efficiency and clean production), business social responsibility focusing on the environment, eco design and telecommunications. (6) The University of Zulia in Maracaibo, www.luz.edu.ve, seeks a specialist in one of a wide variety of fields, including petroleum engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, applied computer science, telecommunications, electronics and electrical power systems, chemical engineering, science and food technology, bio technology, industrial hygiene, health sciences, including nutrition, nursing, genetics, cell biology, occupational health and traumatology, and public health, including emerging diseases, epidemiology, health services management and medical statistics. (7) The Faculty of Chemistry at the University of Carabobo in Valencia, www.uc.edu.ve, seeks specialists in polymers, environment, toxic waste, catalysis, biochemistry, and natural food products.
Language: Fluent Spanish is required; applicants must submit a language proficiency report.
Additional Qualifications: Ph.D. is preferred but master's degree is acceptable with at least 3 years of experience.
Location: Applicants must arrange affiliation and include letter of invitation.
Length of Grant: 3 months to 10 months
Starting Date: September/October 2009 or January 2010
Comments: Candidates are urged to identify a prospective host institution but the U.S. Embassy in Caracas can assist with affiliations and contact information. Grantee should check with the Embassy prior to making travel arrangements.
