Roving Scholar in American Studies (Lower Secondary Level)

Grant Activity: Serve as a roving scholar in American studies. The scholar will visit lower secondary schools (student ages 14-16) and teacher conferences to give up-to-date information on important issues related to American society. The aim is to give teachers of English an opportunity to interact with an American colleague and to let students practice their English, confront an American with some of their ideas on the U.S., and experience an American teacher's approach to teaching. The scholar will travel to schools throughout Norway to participate in one-day in-service trainings and teach classes together with Norwegian teachers. Class size will vary from 10-30.
Specialization(s): American studies for lower secondary school teachers
Language: English is sufficient.
Additional Qualifications: Ph.D. is an advantage, not a prerequisite. The scholar should have extensive teaching experience, particularly with students between 14-16 years old.
Location: Norwegian Directorate for Education and Training
Length of Grant: 9 months
Starting Date: Mid-August 2009
Comments: The position requires extensive travel throughout the country. The scholar should be interested in meeting with and teaching teenagers, versatile, open-minded and able to convey to young Norwegian students different aspects of American society. The scholar should have the ability to present and practice modern teaching methods, provide information on modern literature of interest to young people and discuss political, historical, educational and social issues.
