Grant Activity: Conduct research and undertake revisions needed to turn the applicant's doctoral dissertation into a book or a series of articles for major journals. Applicant will give periodic seminars in area of research and may be asked to teach one course in area of specialization and/or contribute to the scholarly and research activities of the Institute-level research and development centre to which the applicant will be affiliated.

Language: While Chinese language facility and some background knowledge of Chinese culture and society is desirable, it is not essential.

Additional Qualifications: Scholars who completed a Ph.D. or Ed.D. in the last 3 years or who are in the last stages of completing their dissertations are preferred, but senior scholars in the indicated specializations who would undertake comparative study can apply.

Length of Grant: 9 months to 12 months

Starting Date: September 2009 or later but grant must be completed by August 31, 2010.

Comments: Applicants who have not received their doctoral degree at the time of application must have received their degree by the time that the grant begins. This must be certified by a letter from the registrar at their university. They should also include a letter from their dissertation directors indicating the likely date of completion. The benefit package for this award includes: a monthly stipend (HK$25,000), a housing subsidy (HK$6,000), international travel (HK$15,000) and a research allowance (HK$25,000) for regional travel and purchase of materials. Note that these benefits will be paid in Hong Kong dollars. The grant is supported by the HKIED. The U.S. Department of State will provide a health benefit.
