Postdoctoral Research in the Social Sciences for China Specialists

Grant Activity: Conduct research to extend the applicant's doctoral dissertation and prepare it for publication as a monograph or a series of articles for major journals. Applicant will give periodic seminars in area of research and may be asked to teach one course in area of specialization or to mentor graduate students.
Specialization(s): political science, public administration, public policy, international relations, anthropology, sociology, psychology, geography, urban studies, social policy, and social work
Language: Level of capability in Mandarin or a Chinese dialect appropriate to the project
Additional Qualifications: Award open only to applicants who received their Ph.D. no more than three years before the time of application or who are in the last stage of completing their dissertation.
Location: Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Hong Kong
Length of Grant: 9 months to 12 months
Starting Date: September 2008 or later but grant must be completed by August 31, 2009
Comments: Comparative projects focusing on Greater China are welcome. The grantee may include short visits to China to collect data as part of the grant activities. The benefit package for this award includes a monthly stipend (HK$25,000), a housing subsidy (HK$6,000), international travel (HK$15,000) and a research allowance (HK$25,000) for travel and purchase of materials. Note that these benefits will be paid in Hong Kong dollars. Grantees will be provided with a work station and desktop computer. The grant is supported by a contribution from a private donor, Dr. Serena Yang. The U.S. Department of State will provide a health benefit.
