Category:  Lecturing/Research or Research
Number of Awards: 2
Deadline:  August 1, 2008
Grant Activity: This fellowship is designed to enable active domestic police officers and civilian professional staff involved in policy aspects of policing to extend their professional expertise by researching an aspect or problem of policing shared by U.S. and UK police forces. Grantees may conduct research or do a combination of lecturing and research in their field of expertise. Candidates must develop a substantive project and demonstrate that participation in the program will produce benefits of significance to the larger law enforcement community.
Additional Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, police studies or related discipline within the social sciences preferred. Those without a degree who have shown professional excellence will be considered.
Location: The grantee is expected to arrange his/her own affiliation(s) to a higher education host institution appropriate to the research topic. A letter of invitation is not required at the time of application, but is advantageous.
Length of Grant: 3 months to 6 months
Starting Date: Between September 2009 and April 2010
Comments: Applicants must be currently employed by a police force and must be recommended by supervisory staff within their department. Grantees must have full or partial financial support from their home department. Police Fellows are not required to follow a course but must have an affiliation with an institution relevant to their research project. A letter of invitation is not required at the time of application, but the commission will wish to see evidence that an affiliation in the UK is being sought. Affiliation with a host institution must be confirmed before the grant period may begin and the proposed host should have links with the UK police force and should be appropriate for the research program. The major police training center in the UK is Bramshill College in Hampshire. Their facilities are extensive and they have previously hosted recipients of this award. Bramshill is also a useful starting point for finding affiliation elsewhere in the country and candidates are encouraged to contact them for advice on suitable locations for any particular course of study. For more information on Bramshill visit www.centrex.police.uk or contact Sarah Thompson (sarah.thompson@centrex.pnn.police.uk). The following universities also offer relevant courses: Queen's University, Belfast; Brunel University; University of Cambridge; Cardiff University; Coventry University; University of Durham; University of Edinburgh; University of Keele; University of Kent at Canterbury; King's College, London; Kingston University; University of Leeds; Leicester University; University of Lincolnshire and Humberside; Liverpool Hope University; Liverpool John Moores University; London School of Economics; Loughborough University; Oxford Brookes University; University of Manchester; University of Portsmouth; University of Sheffield; University of Southampton; University of Stirling; University of Wales, Bangor; and University of West England (Bristol).
