Comments: The Nord Pas de Calais region is situated at the heart of the "Golden Triangle" of Europe's three great capital cities: London, Paris, and Brussels. Research in the Nord Pas de Calais is a long-standing tradition. Take, as an example, Louis Pasteur, who in 1856 was the first dean of the Sciences Faculty at Lille. Today the rapid development of a multitude of fields, the quantity of equipment available, and the number of important publications and honors awarded to some 6,500 professors, scholars, and 250 laboratories are proof of the enduring commitment to research in Nord Pas de Calais. Engineering, life sciences, humanities, social sciences, and multidisciplinary research centers in Nord Pas de Calais can vaunt a national and international reputation. With the development of chosen fields such as ground transportation, production and communications engineering, biology, health sciences, food processing industries, environmental sciences, and microelectronics, the Nord Pas de Calais region offers a wide variety of research opportunities. The following Web site offers detailed information on the research environment there: www.poleuniv-lille-npdc.fr/n_recherche/index.html. If you have not already established ties with a host institution in the region and are planning to solicit the required letter of invitation, please contact Amy Tondu, head of the American Section, at atondu@fulbright-france.org. She will supply you with an electronic letter from the Franco-American Commission explaining to potential hosts what the program is, how it is funded, and what the requirements for hosting institutions would be.
