Islamic Studies
Award #9155
Category:  Lecturing, Lecturing/Research or Research
Deadline:  August 1, 2008
Grant Activity: Lecture and/or conduct research in any area of Islamic studies including Islamic fine and performing arts and architecture. Lecturing is in English and has generally been limited to graduate courses or seminars, as undergraduate instruction is in Bahasa Malaysia (Malaysian national language). Fulbright Scholars typically also conduct faculty seminars on teaching methods and curriculum development or other issues of professional interest. Fulbright Scholars are also frequently invited to lecture at other Malaysian universities. Courses and seminars to be taught are planned in conjunction with the host department, but applicants should propose and include sample syllabi for specific courses they are prepared to teach. In the case of applications for lecturing/research or research, collaborative research proposals to be conducted jointly with faculty at the host institution are preferred.
Language: English is widely spoken in Malaysia, particularly within the academic community, and graduate instruction is in English. For research purposes, some knowledge of Bahasa Malaysia will be helpful.
Additional Qualifications: Professionals may apply if they have at least 3 years of university teaching experience beyond terminal degrees.
Location: See comments.
Length of Grant: 5 months or 10 months
Starting Date: May or June 2009, or November 2009 preferred. Other dates are also possible but research grantees must complete work by April 2010.
Comments: Grantees will be affiliated with one of the key Islamic institutions in the vicinity of Kuala Lumpur: International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization (ISTAC), International Islamic University, Malaysia (IIUM) and Malaysian Institute for Islamic Understanding (IKIM). These are institutions that (1) can shape the nature of thinking about Islam in Malaysia and beyond, (2) are open to interaction with others holding differing views, (3) have the capacities to contribute to U.S. understanding of Islam, and (4) have both the physical and human resources to participate in the program. Grantees will have the opportunity to participate in academic and cultural activities related to Islamic studies in Malaysia, including lectures, conferences, symposia and exhibitions. Grants are traditionally for either a single semester (5 months) or a full academic year (10 months), though applications proposing stays of at least 3 months will also be considered. While applicants are encouraged to initiate correspondence with a potential host institution and include an invitation letter from a specific institution from amongst ISTAC, IIUM and IKIM, the Malaysian-American Commission on Educational Exchange reserves the right to make assignments based on the best match between the expertise of the grantee and the needs of the prospective host institution, and to determine the final affiliation based on the needs and interests of applicants and contributions by prospective hosts.
